1.7.2 Consensual Sexual or Romantic Relationships In the Workplace and Educational Setting
Susanna Chamberlain does not work for, consult, own shares in or receive funding from any company or organisation that would benefit from this article, and has disclosed no relevant affiliations beyond their academic appointment. One of the factors that can help or hinder this period of study is the relationship between supervisor and student. Research shows that effective supervision can significantly influence the quality of the PhD and its success or failure.
PhD supervisors tend to fulfil several functions: the teacher; the mentor who can support and facilitate the emotional processes; and the patron who manages the springboard from which the student can leap into a career. Although research suggests that providing extra mentoring support and striking the right balance between affiliation and control can help improve PhD success and supervisor relationships, there is little research on the types of PhD-supervisor relationships that occur.
To later change committee members, the student’s advisor must notify the Without this form, a diploma will not be ordered for you and your graduation date will.

Last year at a conference I was talking to one of my mentors about how it felt to be in the final year of a PhD. Her reply summed it up:. Relationships are incompatible with PhDs, seems to be the conclusion. Put most simply, being the partner of a PhD student largely means accepting that the Thesis is the biggest part of both of your lives , and is a far bigger player in how your relationship goes than either of you are.

This policy highlights the risks in sexual or romantic relationships in the Stanford workplace or academic setting between individuals in inherently unequal positions; prohibits certain relationships between teachers and students; and requires recusal from supervision and evaluation and notification in other relationships. Applies to all students, faculty, staff, and others who participate in Stanford programs and activities. There are special risks in any sexual or romantic relationship between individuals in inherently unequal positions, and parties in such a relationship assume those risks.
In the university context, such positions include but are not limited to teacher and student, supervisor and employee, senior faculty and junior faculty, mentor and trainee, adviser and advisee, teaching assistant and student, principal investigator and postdoctoral scholar or research assistant, coach and athlete, attending physician and resident or fellow, and individuals who supervise the day-to-day student living environment and their students. Because of the potential for conflict of interest, exploitation, favoritism, and bias, such relationships may undermine the real or perceived integrity of the supervision and evaluation provided.
Further, these relationships are often less consensual than the individual whose position confers power or authority believes. In addition, circumstances may change, and conduct that was previously welcome may become unwelcome. Even when both parties have consented at the outset to a sexual or romantic involvement, this past consent does not remove grounds for a charge based upon subsequent unwelcome conduct.
Such relationships may also have unintended, adverse effects on the climate of an academic program or work unit, thereby impairing the learning or working environment for others — both during such a relationship and after any break-up. Relationships in which one party is in a position to evaluate the work or influence the career of the other may provide grounds for complaint by third parties when that relationship gives undue access or advantage, restricts opportunities, or simply creates a perception of these problems.
Additionally, even when a relationship ends, there may be bias even if unintentional for or against the former partner, or there could be an ongoing impression of such bias; in other words, the effects of a romantic or sexual relationship can extend beyond the relationship itself. For all of these reasons, sexual or romantic relationships–whether regarded as consensual or otherwise–between individuals in inherently unequal positions should in general be avoided and in many circumstances are strictly prohibited by this policy.

As a result, multiple roles of teacher-therapist and student-client were very common and often unavoidable in such training institutions and programs. Trainees are allowed to fulfill the therapy or analysis requirement with therapists or analysts from outside the institutes in order to avoid the dual roles of clients and students.
The issues of sexual relationships between faculty and students in training institutions and graduate and post-graduate programs has also been a major concern in recent decades. Marriage and family therapists are aware of their influential positions with respect to clients, and they avoid exploiting the trust and dependency of such persons.
Therapists, therefore, make every effort to avoid conditions and multiple relationships with clients that could impair professional judgment or increase the risk of exploitation. When the risk of impairment or exploitation exists due to conditions or multiple roles, therapists document the appropriate precautions taken. Marriage and family therapists do not engage in sexual or other forms of harassment of clients, students, trainees, supervisees, employees, colleagues, or research subjects.

The Perils of Dating a PhD Student (or: an Honest Academic’s Dating Profile… )
Sexual or romantic relationships may raise concerns of conflict of interest, abuse of authority, favoritism, and unfair treatment when both people are in the MIT work or academic environment, and one person holds a position of power or authority over the other. These relationships may also affect others in the work or academic environment, undermining the integrity of their supervision and evaluation as well. These concerns exist even when the relationship is considered consensual by both individuals.
In some instances, consent may not be as freely given as the more senior person in the relationship believes.

The students get to choose their supervisor via speed-dating. What is he getting himself into, wondered some of the colleagues of Willem Heiser, Professor of Methodology and Statistics at the Institute of Psychology. In early Heiser submitted an application to the NWO Graduate Programme, completely side-stepping the fact that he will be retiring in And they have to work hard for it.
They will then select a thesis supervisor via speed-dating and a thesis topic during a Summer School. Together with their supervisor, they will write a research proposal. The grant is not linked to a university, but to a student. He is delighted with the success of the grant application and the direct link between the research groups of the universities, all six of which were chosen on the basis of the research audits.
He sees the Graduate Programme grant as a binding factor and a strengthening of the Graduate School.

Many of our Doctoral courses do not have a formal closing date — we have rolling start dates throughout the year depending on the department you wish to join. You are strongly advised to contact a potential supervisor before applying. You may wish to provide the supervisor with a copy of your Curriculum Vitae CV and indicate what your proposed topic of study is, the potential start date and how you propose to fund the project. These meetings are an important part of your relationship with your supervisor and will play a big role in shaping how effective that relationship is; so it is important that you spend some time thinking about what you can do to make these meetings as constructive as possible.
If you have ever been involved in a formal meeting you will know that two key roles are those of the chairperson and the secretary. In your meetings with your supervisor, you will combine both of these roles. To make the most of your meetings with your supervisor and to ensure that these are as constructive as possible, it may be worth thinking about your role in more detail. You and your supervisory team should at the start of your research degree discuss how often you will have formal supervisory meetings and whose responsibility it will be to schedule these.
Having regular formal supervisory meetings is usually beneficial to both sides, so we would suggest that these meetings are held at least:. Formal supervisory meetings for research students registered on other doctoral degree programmes are held at least monthly full-time programmes or every two months part-time programmes. However, formal supervisory meetings on these programmes may not commence until the research student has completed all taught components of the programme.
